Year 2A teacher and ‘Be You - Well Being Co-Ordinator’, Kim Morgan and her dog, Shadow successfully undertook a five day K9 Support Intensive Therapy Dog Training program in Benalla. This initiative was partially funded by Family Life, delivering Intervention Programs for DET. Shadow will work at school this year, as part of our Well Being Program and will be a gradual process.
ABOUT OUR DOG SHADOW I am a 10 year old Schnoodle (Toy Poodle x Schnauzer). I live with my family, and my mum is Kim Morgan. Many of my past friends are now in Year 6. My Therapy Training took 5 days and I had to be tested for temperament and how I cope with lots of people, cafes, shops, hospitals, patients, prams, dogs, kids, babies, traffic, crashing, banging, surprises and chickens too. They gave me a mat to sit on in my mum’s office at school on and a vest that is my uniform to wear when I am at work. I look forward to working with you, Mrs Mayes and the teachers. Please send any questions to my mum.
OUTLINED BELOW ARE A FEW AREAS TO FILL IN THE GAPS REGARDING THE THERAPY DOG PROGRAM
Patterson Lakes Primary School received funding from the School Focussed Youth Service (SFYS) 2018 - 2019, Family Life; who deliver dogs in school programs for DET.
Targeted Intervention using an in School Therapy Dog aims to support students to develop skills, including emotional literacy, co-regulation, belonging and positive relationships at school.
As part of my professional practice, I have successfully completed the five day K9 Support Therapy Dog Training course in Benalla.
My own dog, Shadow (who is known to many in the PLPS community and families) passed all the rigors of the training and suitability.
The Program will be promoted in the school newsletter; an opt out letter will also go out to families.
I have been fortunate to be mentored by the Beaumaris North Primary School regarding their amazing work with two dogs. Check them out at: http://beaumarisnorthps.vic.edu.au/dogtherapy/
This program will be gradually introduced, working initially with the Year 2 Well Being Program on Fridays.
I will be consulting with the Be You (Kids Matter) to look at how this program could be enhanced.
The school, staff and students will be informed of the protocol and expectations with a school Therapy Dog.
